Fun Fun Fun

Surprisingly good after work sail. Was going to head out on my bike, but just popped down to the beach first to have a look.. James was already out. I rigged big with a 5.8 and 110L fsw and planed off the beach. Over the next couple of hours, the wind filled in and a fun wave developed. Great fun! Still chilly though...

Wiggle Jurassic Beast

Just as I was relaxing on Friday evening and enjoying a cool beer, I had a phone call from a friend reminding me I'd signed up for the Wiggle Jurassic Beast. Turns out it was Sunday and not in two weeks time as I'd planned. Fortunately, the weather forecast was amazing and the drive not too long for the early Sunday start. Getting up at six did not feel right.

Over eight hundred people signed up for the event and judging by the fullness of the overflow car park at the Bovington Tank Museum, most were taking advantage of the good weather. Credit to UK Cycling Events and Wiggle for the organisation and the route.

After some debate, we opted for Standard 64 miles (100km) rather than the Epic 100miles. I'm glad we did. Set in the gorgeous Purbecks, the route is anything but flat. Even the sections you think might be flat such as the run out of Wareham to East Creech turn out to be long painful climbs with a headwind to further slow progress. I was thankful the route was on my local patch - at least I knew how much further each climb would last.

In the end, my official time was 4 hours 17 min 27 sec giving an average speed of 15 mph which I was pretty pleased with. Next time though, I won't be rushing to start so early. For the last 20 miles or so I was on my own which defeated the point of joining the Sportive. Longer asleep, followed by more company on the way round sounds like a good idea!

Sandbanks

Early morning session at Sandbanks, but it was onshore, gusty and full of holes. Not great! Met another guy from work though so not all lost... And I was planing (at times) so it counts!

Flooded Purbecks

There's a waterfall a Kimmeridge. Normally it's just a trickle, but today it was a raging torrent. Just getting there was an experience, at least three or four times I had to slow down to crawling speed to traverse a flooded road. There's no doubt about it, I arrived at KBay too early. Although the wind had swung from North Easterly to South Easterly in Bournemouth it was still straight offshore in Kimmeridge. There was nothing to do but sit in the van avoiding the torrential rain and wait it out.

Eventually, the wind turned and the rain relented. It was kind of windy so I headed out. Of course, there hadn't been any time for a wind swell to form so it more just about mirror flat. And gusty. Very gusty. In the end, I gave up pretty quickly as it was too frustrating after the recent incredible conditions. Of course, I got back to Bournemouth with the wind building and building all evening. Am sure KBay will be great on Monday morning, but I've got work to do.

Overpowered joy

I wasn't going to sail today. Yesterday was so good and I was feeling quite tired. Then, as I was driving home I saw the trees swaying and thought I should just have a look. So I popped down to BDC. The sun was shining, the white caps glistening and a small wave pushing through. The tide was on the drop and I knew it would only get better. The adrenalin kicked in and there was nothing for it but to get out there. Pic from Andrew Christopher Photography

I rigged a 5.2 which was perfect when I launched, but then instead of the wind dropping as the evening progressed, it seemed to get stronger and strong. By the end I was crazily overpowered and should have been on a 4.2. The further out back I sailed, went the stronger the wind. Gybing was nigh on impossible. By the beach the waves were breaking waist high between the groynes. BDC is really working at the moment. I left super stoked!

Jump Around

The first decent low pressure system of Spring is pushing through this week. The wind has been crazy. 50+ knots earlier today! Sandbanks was the call, and Jem Hall, Jamie Hancock, James Cox and Timo were all present. I rigged a 4.2 to give me enough to get out the back and after a slight adjustment to the downhaul and outhaul it turned out to be perfect. Better still, the wind turned slightly from onshore to cross-shore leaving half-mast faces lining up for jumping.
It was incredibly good! Hanging in the air being blown sideways through the air, landing softly and then hitting the next ramp for the same again. One run stands out as the highlight for me - three huge jumps on the way out, a clean planing gybe out back, backside wave riding on the way back in, through a clean tack on my 75L WaveCult by the beach and straight through the shore break to repeat. I can finally do this sport! sometimes...

KBay Shocker

After Saturday, hopes were high for Sunday. While I contemplated whether to stay local or drive over to Kimmeridge, Timo gave the KBay shout. In contrast to Saturday, there were at least half a dozen windsurfers hanging around including the Southbourne gang.

We were all to be disappointed. A super low tide lasting most of the afternoon put paid to any waves and the wind stayed a bang onshore south-westerly hovering around a frustrating 10-15 knots. In other words, not enough to get planing. The odd squall came through to get us moving at which times the temperature dropped considerably. I even put my gloves on... In April!

Most of the afternoon was spent bobbing across the bay gybing, tacking and heli-tacking. They say time on the water is the best way to improve so all water time is good but this was not what we'd bargained for. Still, on the plus side I made three consecutive port-tack heli-tacks and hardly dropped a light-wind starboard tack gybe. Now I just need to remind myself how to light wind gybe on port and learn to heli-tack on starboard... It's never ending!

Seek...

...and ye shall find. One of the main reasons I took up windsurfing was to have a sport where you walk away remembering the highlights. I used to play a lot of golf, but it became more about the one that got away than the ones you made. Windsurfing is the polar opposite and today summed this up.

I took a chance. The forecast was iffy. I rigged up and stood around in my mysuit for twenty minutes on the Ledges. I waded out to waist deep water stumbling over the submerged lumps of rock. There was a wave but not enough wind to get out. Then all of a sudden it came good. The wind picked up, I planed out the back and had a handful of waves all to myself.... A few were shoulder high, the best I gave me three top turns. The rest doesn't matter, that one wave alone made it all worthwhile.

Between the piers

Sweet session between the piers. Good session but probably arrived a little early as the tide was still high when I launched. Big swell so tough getting out but good jumping on the way. Some chunky sets coming through but difficult to pick out and many closing out. Couple of good wave rides but needed tigger bottom turns to make the most of the conditions.

More like it

After yesterday's warm up, two sessions at Branksome Dene in fully powered conditions. Couple of hours in the morning bump and jump, started on a 5.2 / quad combination and then changed down to a 4.2 / 75 WaveCult as the wind picked up. Good jumping and made a few tacks on the 75L which had me smiling ear to ear.

Popped home for lunch and then back for the main event. As the tide dropped and the wind turned slightly more SW'ly, a rolling swell came through turning into a head high wave. The wind was crazy and I'd soon pulled maximum downhaul onto the 4.7 partnered with the quad. Three bottom / top turn combinations is not the norm at BDC but it was today. A few swims followed but nothing too dramatic. Amazing feeling to be throwing top-turn spray on your home break!

Great to see so many people out after the winter and reassuring that the sport is still very much alive.

More please.
